Acupuncture and Threatened Miscarriage is a topic that certainly doesn’t receive enough attention. There are few things more important in life than its preservation and safety, and at no time is this more important than during pregnancy. In my previous article, Acupuncture and Miscarriage Prevention I introduced the various aspects of miscarriage and provided a brief overview. In this article I shall focus primarily on Threatened Miscarriage and explain it from both a western and eastern point of view, and what you can do in such a situation to minimize or prevent such an occurrence.

A threatened miscarriage is when there is warning symptoms and signs such as bleeding, lower back ache, and cramps. If such signs and symptoms present you must contact your doctor immediately, however, in most pregnancies some small bleeding and cramping may occur and you should not be unduly alarmed.

The key point with Acupuncture and Threatened Miscarriage is that the cervix is still closed and there is evidence that the foetus is viable. This is information is acquired through a series of simple and harmless tests such as an ultrasound, or a Doppler device (this is a hand held ultrasound that can find a foetal heart beat as early as 10 weeks).

In a case of Acupuncture and Threatened Miscarriage one has to look at the underlying pattern of disharmony that could lead to a threatened miscarriage. For the most part these are divided into two categories –

1. Those suffering from a deficiency of Kidney Yin, or possible Spleen Qi sinking, Qi or Blood Deficiencies. Basically this means that the energy used in reproduction is weak, and that the circulation of Qi (the energy discussed in Acupuncture and Threatened Miscarriage), has slowed or suppressed.

2. There is excess heat in the blood. By this we mean that blood is too volatile and unstable. In this case there may be underlying emotional factors such as stress and frustration which would be connected to the Liver, or the Heart. There may also be some dietary concerns derived from excessively hot spicy foods, alcohol, or smoking.

Acupuncture and Threatened Miscarriage works through strengthening the Kidney and Spleen or alternatively calming the Liver or Heart. This is done through needling specific Acupuncture points, moxa, and dietary advice. A full diagnosis will be made by your acupuncturist and then a full treatment plan outlined to reduce any chances of Threatened Miscarriage.

Finally let me leave you with the words of one of my patients...

A Healthy and Full Term Pregnancy:

Stephanie Hyland (34) hadn't had too much trouble getting pregnant. But, she had suffered two early miscarriages, which left her feeling distraught.

"Then I saw Paul's card up in my gym. He treated me, and just weeks later, I was pregnant. I've been seeing him every week since.

"I'm now 18 weeks pregnant. And I'm thrilled. "Acupuncture is very relaxing," she says. "I feel really good after each session."

- As Featured in the Irish Independant, words by Sue Leonard.

UPDATE: Stephanie has given birth to a beautiful baby girl; I wish both her and her newborn daughter the very best of health.
