Welcome to this September Edition of "Straight to the Point", the Meridian Acupuncture Clinic newsletter.

It’s been an amazing few weeks in the clinic. I’ve had the privilege of seeing 2 new boys and 2 new girls enter the world - my heartfelt congratulations to the new mums, (bringing the total to over 60 babies born to my patients!). Speaking of new babies I’m prepping for delivering my first baby in the Coombe hospital, which should be any day now.

Speaking of which, I have a new article in my pregnancy series – “Acupuncture for Labour Induction”. Many of my patients know that you can treat injuries with acupuncture, that you can boost fertility, but help deliver a baby. Well, not only is it true but it among the most effective pain relieving methods of child birth. Read all about it here -


I’m also very pleased to announce that I have been asked to lend my experience to an expert panel on a new study with regards to the support of MS. I’ve been reviewing the support material and think this could be the start of an excellent additional service providing much needed support to those caring for, and those living with MS.

September - the Anti-Spring

September is in many ways the Anti-Spring for most of my patients, and perhaps for you too. Spring is a time to new growth, nature waking once more to a new season, a call to action to become more active. September rather than as a start of re-birth is the beginning of the decline of nature. The slowing down of the natural order, and as a natural organism ourselves we often should slow down too, but we don’t.

In September many of us act against the naturally slowing rhythm and cycle of the year. Rather than slow down and quietly gather ourselves and prepare for a relaxed winter, we instead attempt a second spring and run around renewing things.

Mothers are busy preparing their children to re-start, or start for the first time, the school year. There is a flurry of activity and running around; shopping for school uniforms, books and new schedules. It is often times a period of stress, chaos and burning the candles at both ends. Not a time of consolidation and rest.

Students are heading back to college, preparing for exams only months away, the submission of thesis and papers that eat into their mental and emotional energy levels. Often times they are rushing back in having only just returned from extended vacations; freedom and fun now instantly replaced with restriction and obligation with no time for adjustment. Executives, who also are only just returning from vacation, are often afflicted with “post holidays blues”. Entering into environments that are high on stress and a constant flurry of movement and deadline pressure.

These are necessary aspects of our modern lives, but they aren’t in alignment with the natural pace of environment.

The season itself is a time of change and transition, a period when the body is making its own adjustments. Rather than giving the body time to do this and balance itself we are too busy with these other activities. Many of us feel overwhelmed, stressed and saddened as a result, leaving us vulnerable and open to illness and caused by dysfunction of the organs.

You can prevent such dysfunction and maintain high energy levels, and a healthy balanced perspective with very little interruption to the necessary activities of life though.

Creating a “buffer zone”; 10-30 minutes of personal time for yourself each day after work or home runs can have a hugely positive impact on your health. You can make this time for yourself as simple or as complex as you like – a bubble bath, meditation, yoga, enjoying a cup of tea in peace and quiet. But make sure you do it.

This is a secret of “blue zones” areas around the world. These are places that have very long living people and are found in every part of the world. They all enjoy excellent health and long life, and they all have one thing in common. Not diet, not work, not environment. The one thing they all share is that they make time each evening to decompress, they each have their own buffer zone.

You can strengthen your health even more by adding some easy and tasty foods into your diet that can support the health of your organs, and with a relaxing and invigorating session or two of acupuncture you can make sure your are balanced with your environment and your life. School runs, deadlines and work stress can be easily managed, and you’ll have more than enough energy to take care of all of these things and more.
